City Council to Vote on Neighborhood Participation Program will be deferred to July 25

Update 07/10/13: I was just told that the City Council vote on City Planning’s Neighborhood Participation Program will be deferred until their July 25 meeting. Sorry for any confusion. I will report more information as it become available.

At Thursday’s meeting (July 11, 2013), City Council will on the ordinance to implement City Planning Commission’s Neighborhood Participation Program (NPP). This ordinance is Item #37 on the Regular City Council agenda. You can view the entire ordinance at this link. This is the final step for adopting the NPP, and it will go into effect the day after it is signed by the Mayor.

The NPP will require more and better notice to surrounding residents, property owners, and neighborhood groups. It will also require that the applicant hold a meeting prior to submitting their proposal to the City Planning Commission, and they will be required to invite the surrounding residents, property owners, and neighborhood groups. This is a significant step towards ending “planning by surprise’ and creating a Citizen Participation Program in New Orleans. More information about the Neighborhood Participation Program can be found at the City Planning Commission’s website.
